MARCH 25, 2027
6-8 pm
Before there are words, there is sound. This workshop invites participants to use sound and music as tools of discovery rather than decoration: ways to uncover what a story wants to be, disrupt the habits our creative practice falls into, and find new entry points into character, image, and structure. Through listening exercises and collective sound-making – recorded on our phones, a tape deck, whatever’s on hand – we’ll practice building from accretion rather than outline. No musical training required – just an open ear. Whether you write, act, direct, design, or don’t yet know what you make, you’ll leave with a new way of listening to your own work.
All workshops will take place in the Robert W. Wilson MCC Theater Space at 511 W. 52nd Street in Hell’s Kitchen. You can find out more about our Workshops and other Public Engagement offerings here.
2026/27 WORKSHOPS
This playwriting workshop opens with a discussion about the “4th wall,” what necessitates an audience, audience engagement and potential responsibility. You will leave with a writer’s start-up kit, a personal inventory based on a list of themes, and a rough structure/scaffolding to hang your story upon.
More
In this hands-on workshop, participants will explore the history and traditions of shadow puppetry from around the world while learning how light, shadow, and movement come together to tell stories. Participants will leave with their own portable shadow theatre and puppets, along with the tools to continue creating shadow plays and stories at home!
