APRIL 3, 2027
2-4 pm
Step into the world of shadow puppetry! In this hands-on workshop, participants will explore the history and traditions of shadow puppetry from around the world while learning how light, shadow, and movement come together to tell stories. Participants will then create their own DIY shadow-play setup, building a simple shadowbox theatre that they can take home and use for their own performances. Afterwards they’ll also be put into groups to create a skit using the shadow box they will create! By the end of the workshop, participants will have their own portable shadow theatre and puppets, along with the tools to continue creating shadow plays and stories at home!
All workshops will take place in the Robert W. Wilson MCC Theater Space at 511 W. 52nd Street in Hell’s Kitchen. You can find out more about our Workshops and other Public Engagement offerings here.
2026/27 WORKSHOPS
This playwriting workshop opens with a discussion about the “4th wall,” what necessitates an audience, audience engagement and potential responsibility. You will leave with a writer’s start-up kit, a personal inventory based on a list of themes, and a rough structure/scaffolding to hang your story upon.
