A 32-YEAR JOURNEY TO HELL’S KITCHEN
The New York Times
Bernie Telsey was still a student at N.Y.U. when he met an actor named Robert LuPone and decided to form a theater club. Their duo became a trio when they met Will Cantler, and soon they were putting on shows whenever and wherever they could. That was more than three decades ago, and over the years the company they founded — now called MCC Theater, with a focus on new work by living writers — has become one of the more respected Off Broadway nonprofits…

“…Their personalities were completely distinct. But together, this unlikely trio made up a magical mojo. “Will Cantler had the quiet calm of a contract killer,” recalled Hedges. Telsey had the curly locks of Led Zeppelin’s Robert Plant. “But they were Shirley Temple red.” Meanwhile, Bob LuPone was for MCC what Harold Clurman was for the group theater.”
More“MCC is one of the nation’s greatest theater incubators. Many of their productions, including Hand to God, The Other Place, Reasons To Be Pretty, and Frozen, have gone on to Broadway. Hand to God was nominated for five Tony awards, including Best Play. Wit, which won the Pulitzer Prize was adapted for film. Plus many MCC works have been re-staged throughout the world.”

“one of the nation’s GREATEST theater INCUBATORS.”

“We couldn’t ask for a more fitting institution to help drive home BOB’S COMMITMENT to supporting EDUCATION and CULTURE.”
“I know I speak on behalf of everyone at the Trust when I say it is truly an honor to be a part of the Robert W. Wilson MCC Theater Space. We know the space that bears Bob’s name will be a tremendous asset to this community and a generator to some of the most important art of our time. We couldn’t ask for a more fitting institution to help drive home Bob’s commitment to supporting education and culture.”
RICHARD G. SCHNEIDMAN, a trustee of the Robert W. Wilson Charitable Trust.
