DIRECTOR OF FINANCE

MCC Theater seeks a skilled, proactive and creative Director of Finance as an integral part of the organization’s senior leadership team. This newly created position has responsibility for management, reporting and analysis of all financial activities, and will play a key a role in strategic planning. The Director of Finance will report to the Executive Director and Treasurer and will work collaboratively with executive leadership, the Board, and across the organization.

 

ABOUT MCC THEATER:

Over more than 30 years, MCC Theater has established itself as a leading and award-winning off-Broadway theater company. MCC’s mission to provoke conversations that have never happened and otherwise never would is achieved across four program areas: annual productions of new plays and musicals; development of new work by artists with bold voices; deep and enriching public engagement initiatives; and, intensive in-school and after-school programs that foster in high school students that desire to be heard and speak out.

 

In January 2019, MCC opened its new $20 million state-of the art theater complex, The Robert W. Wilson MCC Theater Space, which houses all productions, programming and administrative operations under one roof. Recent productions include School Girls; or The African Mean Girls Play, BLKS, All the Natalie Portmans, The Wrong Man, Alice by Heart, The Legend of Georgia McBride, and Hand to God, among many others.

 

COMPENSATION: This is a full-time, exempt position. Salary is competitive and commensurate with experience: $90,000-$100,000/yr, plus health, dental and vision benefits, opt-in 403(b), and other benefits.

 

RESPONSIBILITIES: Budgeting, forecasting, monthly financial reporting, strategic planning, annual audit, coordination of personnel benefits and policies.

 

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  1. Directly supervises and coordinates the activities of the finance department, ensuring that U.S. generally accepted accounting principles (GAAP) are followed in keeping MCC’s financial records.
  2. Establishes and maintains financial objectives and policies as well as written procedures and internal controls.
  3. Monitors revenue and disbursement cycles; projects and manages cash flow and makes determinations regarding any variances and works with the Executive Director and others to take appropriate steps to get back on track and/or plan.
  4. Creates annual budgets and projections; establishes and evaluates key performance metrics and trends.
  5. Establishes long-range priorities for operations and capital expenditures.
  6. Develops on-going policies and procedures on budgeting and drives initiatives to improve operational efficiency, improve control and reduce risk.
  7. Directs month-end and year-end closings of the general ledger; oversees year-end audit and 990 preparation.
  8. Supervises the administration of payroll and benefits.
  9. Liaison to the Finance, Audit and Investment committees.
  10. Manages staff of two.

MINIMUM EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:

  1. At least five years of experience in financial planning/budgeting or relevant work in a financial institution or finance department, including experience managing direct reports; nonprofit experience a plus.
  2. CPA designation preferred, not required.

 

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, ABILITIES, AND CHARACTERISTICS:

  1. Thorough knowledge of U.S. generally accepted accounting principles (GAAP).
  2. Experience with budget preparation and financial management as well as financial reporting and internal controls.
  3. Familiarity with functional cost analysis, fund and investment accounting, financial reporting, payroll, credit card and other payment modalities.
  4. Knowledge of federal tax laws and guidelines for nonprofit organizations.
  5. Skill in capital management and investment as well as borrowing and cash management.
  6. Proficiency with accounting software packages, MS Excel, PowerPoint and Word, QuickBooks
  7. Excellent organizational, oral, and written communication skills
  8. Demonstrated ability to lead, train and manage direct reports and/or teams.
  9. Eagerness to be an active participant in and meaningful contributor to MCC’s ongoing work on creating and nurturing a culture of belonging rooted in equity, diversity and inclusion and apply EDI principles to scope of work.
  10. Collegiality and team orientation a must with opportunities to contribute beyond job parameters.
  11. Knowledge of and enthusiasm for theater, performing arts, and arts education a plus.
